Microsoft announced Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) in September 2018. A public preview evaluation program kicked off in March 2019, with Microsoft intending to make the solution generally available mid-2019. This whitepaper provides an overview of WVD and a historical perspective of the evolution of Windows desktops – especially multi-session Windows. This paper was authored by industry veterans who have been actively involved in multi-session Windows desktop computing since its inception in the early 1990s.
